Jayalalithaa, in a letter to the Prime Minister on Thursday, said India’s continued failure to display intolerance to alleged human rights abuses and war crimes in the final stages of Sri Lanka’s bloody civil war would only amount to an endorsement of the excesses, the report said.

The CM added that India’s participation at the CHOGM in Colombo would worsen already inflamed public sentiment in Tamil Nadu.

“I wish to reiterate Tamil Nadu’s view that India should not participate in the CHOGM hosted by Sri Lanka at any level whether titular, ministerial or official. Only such an action will convey India’s unequivocal stand that it will not tolerate violation of human rights of the Sri Lankan Tamil minority,” read Jayalalithaa’s letter, adding that only such strong diplomatic overtures would ensure that Colombo adopts a “more reasonable” approach towards the island nation’s Tamil minority. “It will also emphatically demonstrate India’s commitment to upholding the values of democracy and respect for human rights globally and, in particular, in our neighbourhood,” her letter said according to the Indian Express News serivce
